I'm currently on the waiting for the dental hygiene program and am completing the pre-reqs... but Im hearing that trying to find a dental hygienist job is super hard nowadays... any ideas as to what I should do? I really want to get my degree but if theres going to absolutley be no demand for this job... I'm screwed.
Help!!!
Any Dental Hygienists who can help me??? please???
Hello, My wife and I own a dental office in Mn,currently the
market for dental Hygienists has decreased. If you look at the
market analysis lately you should realize that people are having a hard time making ends meet. In reality it means that patients will use their expendable income on necessary items, instead of cosmetic and non essential expenditures that at the present time do not need. Our business is down 24% already this year. my advice to you is finish your degree
take a position that gets you in the ground level and build up your experience so you can expand your horizons!!!! A good education is hard to beat, and shows you have commitment as well as desire to succeed..Something an employer looks for in an application. Good Luck to you!!!!
Reply:I think that it depends on the area you are looking into and the size of the dental offices. Smaller offices and larger offices view these positions differently.
Check with people that are currently in the program that you are appling to. See if they are have the same types of issues. Check with the instructors, see if they have heard anything that is similar to what you've been told. Ask your dentist.
In the area that I live, the dental hygienists program is very difficult to get into. Since only one school offers the program out of 6, it is very competitive too.
My brother sister-in-law graduated from this school 5 years ago and is doing fine. I know three people who graduated last May and all are employed- job offers before their certification results came back. Once they recieved the letter from the state- they went right to work.
I am in my last class before I can apply- Sociology. Once I finish this I can transfer my class and hope that all is well. We don't have a waiting list. Out of approximately 150+ applicants, they will take 36.
I took my oldest to the orthodontist last month for a counsultation; he asked what I was studing for and I told him dental hygiene. His eyes lit up and he told me to let him know when I finished cause they are always looking for good help in his practice.
Go with your instinct. Check around and make an informed decision. Smaller dentists may not be looking, but larger practice could have a different view on hiring.
Good Luck.
